About University of Oklahoma
OU is a public research university that traces its earliest beginnings 17 years before Oklahoma was made into a state. It was in 1890 when it was established by the Oklahoma Territorial legislature along with two other institutes. It enrolled its first students two years later and soon started to expand its academics, gradually adding schools and colleges.
It is a space grant institute and is based in Norman, Oklahoma. Being the flagship campus of the University of Oklahoma system, the university has upheld its academic excellence and standard of research activities, promoting discovery, inquiry, leadership and global responsiveness.
At the campus of University of Oklahoma students find a vibrant and exciting environment which enables not just learning and growth but also lasting memories and personal and professional connections. Students get involved around the campus through more than 40 student run organisations which offer a range of interests and fields and serve as friendly spaces for pursuing academic or other interest outside of classrooms. By running these organisations and clubs students learn additional team building skills. Furthermore there is also the Student affairs department which brings activities and programs also aimed at student development through involvement; these include workshops, open dialogues, parent and family programs and others. Students are also shaped into future leaders through program such as George McLaurin Male Leadership Initiative and the Sylvia A. Lewis Women’s Leadership Initiative. They are also made aware of the significance and understanding of diversity through diversity programs such as Diversity Enrichment Programs (DEP). Besides learning, students enjoy taking part in athletic completion at NCAA division I. The teams are called ‘Sooners’, the mascot is ‘Boomer and Sooner’ and the colors are Crimson and Cream.
