UNH is one of the public research universities of the University System of New Hampshire, the roots of which go back to the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts which was founded in 1866 under the Morrill Grant Act of 1862. The institute relocated once and started to grow its academic curriculum gradually. It was in 1923 that it officially got its present name.

It was originally based in Hanover until year 1891 when it was moved to Durham, New Hampshire where it is situated to this day. It has grown into a comprehensive university with its programs focusing on development through research and creativity. It is a land-grant, sea-grant and space-grant institute.

The campus life at University of New Hampshire is vibrant and active full of activities and opportunities that help students to grow and express themselves in unique ways. There are more than 250 student led organisations and clubs and the Greek life which constitute the main part of student interests. Through these, students represent their interests, ideas and also voice their concerns and enjoy the social mobility. Besides learning through each other through these platforms, students also learn to work as leaders by heading these organisations and working towards excellence. There is also formal leadership training offered for leadership development and efforts recognized through Awards. It is the Student Union on campus that governs all these activities and serves as student activity hub. Students also take active part in recreation programs for the students on campus. These include aquatics, intramural sports, sports clubs, and fitness programs. There is also the athletic participation which is most enjoyed by the students, at NCAA Division I. The teams are called ‘Wildcats’, the campus colors are Blue and White and the mascot is the ‘Wild E. Cat’.

The Academic programs at UNH include more than 200 degree programs including majors, minors, Master and Doctoral programs. Its notable facilities and departments are Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, Thompson School of Applied Science, Thompson Hall, Morrill Hall, Pettee Hall, Jackson Estuarine Laboratory, Dimond Library and others.
