University at Buffalo Seal About University at Buffalo

University at Buffalo is a public higher education institute located in Buffalo and Amherst, New York. It is also commonly known as SUNY Buffalo. The university was established in 1846 as a private medical school. The first class started in the following with 89 students. The school initially operated in an old post office till the first university building was established in 1850. The University of Buffalo expanded by establishing other medical programs as the pharmacy division in addition to acquiring in 1891 a law school associated with Niagara University. The university started implementing plans to complete the fundamentals of being a university. The university acquired the Erie County Almshouse grounds for this purpose. In 1916, the university received a donation of $500,000 from Grace Millard Knox to establish department of liberal arts and sciences in the University of Buffalo. In 1959, the university established its radio station which is known as WBFO. In 1962, Buffalo became a public institute when it was purchased and incorporated in the State University of New York. Two years later, the university started establishing the North Campus as a comprehensive campus for non-medical disciplines. In 2004, the university started a strategic plan that continues to 2020 to increase 10,000 students to its enrollment. In 2013, the university hosted the presidential speech by President Barack Obama.

Buffalo operates three campuses: North Campus, South Campus, and Downtown Campus. The North Campus covers 1,192 acres with 146 buildings including the administrative and academic offices. The South Campus covers 154 acres which were formerly the Erie County Almshouse and Insane Asylum. It is known as the Main Street campus with 53 buildings and 6 resident halls. Downtown Campus is the last of the three campuses as it was established in 2002. The university operates 4 hospitals in addition to several free clinics.

University at Buffalo is divided into 13 colleges and schools including the Roswell Park Graduate Division. The university offers 74 bachelor, 190 masters and 83 doctoral programs. Additionally, it offers 18 professional degree programs.
