Union College Seal About Union College

Union is a private liberal arts college that goes a long way into history. It was the first college that was chartered by the New York state Board of Regents when it began in 1795. The institute grew rapidly and also became one of the ‘big four’ institutes. In 1845 it became the first among the liberal arts colleges to introduce engineering.

It was in 1970 that it started admitting women. Based in Schenectady, New York it was named ‘Union’ as a symbol of inclusion of national and religious diversity to the college. To this day, it still maintains to be the place which transforms the lives of its students, helps discover passion and develop a global perspective for better leadership.

Student life at union is all about inclusivity, achievement and making a difference to the lives of others. Activities consist of student run clubs and organisations. These provide the opportunity for the students to serve as leaders while providing others the chance to learn in a friendly environment. A unique program for academic and extracurricular development is the ‘Minerva Houses’ where every student is assigned into one of the seven houses. This helps promote healthy team building among students. Community engagement takes place through volunteering on events such as U-CARE Day or partnering with local organisations such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers, Big Sisters etc. The college is also focused on bringing sustainability projects working for a healthier and greener environment. There is recycling project, the U-Sustain Committee and the Green Grant Program. Students also like express themselves creatively through performing arts activities such as theatre, film series, concerts, Broadway etc. There are also fun campus traditions such as Dutchmen Dip, Ethics Bowl, Lobsterfest, Ozone Café etc. There are also campus athletic teams called ‘Dutchmen/Dutchwomen’ competing at NCAA Division I and III. The official campus color is Union Garnet.

The academic programs at Union are undergraduate programs with 40+ majors and 50+ minors. Its notable facilities are Taylor Music Center, Grant Hall, Hale House, Jackson’s Garden, Lippman Hall, Nott Memorial, Reamer Campus Center, Schaffer Library and Webster House.
