Trinity Washington University is a Roman Catholic higher education institute located in Washington D.C. The university was established in 1897 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. The number of students decreased from 1000 till it reached 300 in 1989. The college responded by starting weekend classes for women from the District of Columbia who were not previously admitted. Later, the college started admitting Hispanic and Black women. Trinity Washington was then split into three colleges.  In 2004 and after years of growth, the college was recognized as a university.

The building was renovated in 1997. Trinity Washington teams compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Great South Athletic Conference. They are nicknamed Tigers while their official colors are purple and gold.
