The California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a public maritime academy that is member of the California State University. It is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. The academy was established in 1929 under the name of California Nautical School. It aimed at preparing students to work as officers in the American Merchant Marine. In the following year, the school purchased a training vessel and a location for its campus. The school faced financial challenges early in its history because of the Great Depression. This kept the school at risk of being terminated in the period between 1933 till 1936 when the Merchant Marine Act secured the funding for the school. In 1939, the name of the school was changed to California Maritime Academy. In the following year, the academy received approval to grant bachelor degrees. Cal Maritime relocated in 1943 to its current location in Vallejo, California. In the 1970s, the academy faced again financial difficulties and the risk of being closed. During the same period, the academy started accepting female students for the first time. In 1996, Cal Maritime joined the California State University System. In the same year, the academy purchased its current training ship T. S. Golden Bear III. In 2015, the academy got its current name which was proposed by President Cropper.

Cal Maritime campus covers 89 acres with several distinctive buildings and facilities including ABS Lecture Hall, Felton Alumni House, Mayo Hall, McAllister Residence Hall, Peachman Lecture Hall and Rizza Auditorium. The academy athletic teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as members of the California Pacific Conference. Their mascot is Keelhaulers.

The academy offers 6 undergraduate programs in addition to a graduate degree program. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. There are several military programs available on campus.
