Geneseo is a public liberal arts college that has its beginning in a teacher training institute that was founded in year 1871. It began as Wadsworth Normal and Training School aimed at preparing teachers in the region through formal education. Upgrading its programs and improving its education throughout this time, the school went on to become a college. It was in 1948 that the college became part of State University of New York.

Based in Geneseo, New York, the college is also a space grant institute. With its curriculum and education involving hands on learning and active intellectual exchange, the college aims to advance its students personally, professionally as well as individualy and collectively.

At SUNY College at Geneseo, the students are provided with various opportunities and an extensive campus life involving mental, character as well as physical development. The students find more than 200 organisations and clubs which work as friendly learning spaces. For student involvement there is also the Center for Community which works to solve student problems and also organize student activities and programs involving leadership, community engagement, fraternity life and multicultural programs. The college has GOLD program, providing leadership development through personal and character development, certificates, service learning program and community engagement. Community engagement involves students volunteering hours towards causes. For a more inclusive campus life multicultural programs are also held creating more awareness about other ethnic backgrounds and communities. There are also many other campus events such as Geneseo Late Knight, Upstate Escapes, Weeks of Welcome etc and also campus traditions such as Bronze Bear, Greek Tree, Seuss Spruce, Alma Mater etc. Physical activities consist of intramurals and sports; there are also athletic teams ‘Knights’ competing at NCAA Division III. The official campus colors are Blue and White.

At Geneseo, the academic programs consist of the following: 49 undergraduate degree programs with 27 interdisciplinary minors, and two Masters degree programs. Its notable facilities are Sturges Hall, Milne Library, Lauderdale Health Center, James B. Welles building, Spencer J. Roemer Arboretum and Doty Hall.
