About SUNY at Binghamton
Binghamton University is a public and higher education research institute that was founded in year 1946 as Triple Cities College. The main purpose behind this college was to provide education to the war veterans returning from WWII. Within a few years, the college was made part of the State University of New York.
It was reamed as well as relocated over this time, and by 1965 came to be settled in its present location in Binghamton, New York with campuses in Vestal, and Johnson City. The university aims to enhance the lives of its students as well as the communities through its quality programs, research and a learning focused environment.
Serving as central to campus life at State University of New York at Binghamton, there are over 160 student clubs and organisations presenting a variety of interests for students to pursue outside classrooms. There is Student Association which works for student welfare on campus and supports programs such as student advocates, volunteer ambulance service, transport and helpline projects, helping students with their problems and grievances. Students also get to enjoy social and entertainment activities and events such as concerts, comedians etc and also events that also promote learning such as speaker series, workshops etc. One unique program is called ‘Late Nite’ where students plan and organise small events every Friday and Saturday nights after 8 pm; these include games, novelties, crafts, music etc. There is Center for Civic Engagement encouraging students to step off campus and be part of community building or working and volunteering for causes. Sports, intramurals and outdoor pursuits are also a major activity for the students; they are part of athletic teams called ‘Bearcats’ competing at NCAA Division I; the mascot is ‘Baxter the Bearcat’ and the colors is Pantone.
Academic programs offered consist of over 130 majors, minors, certificates, and others, and 75+ programs through the Graduate School. Its prestigious departments/facilities are Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Decker School of Nursing, Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science, Anderson Center for the Performing Arts, Couper Administration Building, Glenn G. Bartle Library and more.
