A public research university and one of the campuses of Rutgers University, this campus traces its beginnings to when the flagship institute was founded in 1766. The parent institute began as men’s institute and was called Queens College. Named after the war veteran, Colonel Henry Rutgers, the college was designated as a land grant institute in 1864 and with admission of women in 1819 became a university by 1824.

The university has another campus based in Newark, New Jersey which was established in 1946 as University of Newark (founded in 1908) became part of the university. The campus incorporates knowledge and inquiry into its education with the aim of producing scholarship, and preparing students for more globally creative solutions.

At Rutgers University-Newark, students find diversity as an important factor, combining education and learning with culture, arts, recreation as well as social mobility. There are over 180 student led clubs and organisations which serve as primary units for student activities, learning outside of classrooms and for forming lasting personal and professional relationships. Developing its student’s cultural perspective and enabling them to become effective leaders, there are cultural events held at the campus. Students also get the chance to be involved in service learning trips on a global scale, having worked in India, Tanzania and Nicaragua. The students also get involved with the local community through service and volunteering for causes. Students take part in Alternative Spring Break, Make A Difference Day, Service Day or raising awareness and making donation through the Student Outreach Council. Students also enjoy many entertainment and traditional events at the campus as well; these include DeStress Pancake Breakfast, The Lens: Artist Spotlight, Homecoming and others. There is athletic participation at NCAA Division III by teams ‘Scarlet Raiders’. The campus color is Scarlet.

Academic programs at the campus consist of undergraduate programs with over 40 majors and over 50 programs consisting of graduate and professional programs. Its prominent departments/facilities are Rutgers Law School, Rutgers Business School, John Cotton Dana Library, Don M. Gottfredson Library, lement A. Price Institute on Ethnicity, Culture, and the Modern Experience and more.
