Point Loma Nazarene University Seal About Point Loma Nazarene University

Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is a private college for liberal arts located in San Diego, California. The college was established in 1902 by the Church of the Nazarene as a bible college. It aimed at preparing students to become ministerial and lay leaders for the newly established Nazarene denomination. It was initially named Pacific Bible College. In 1908, the college became officially affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene. The name of the college was changed in 1909 to Deets Pacific Bible College before changing the name again in the following year to Nazarene University. In the same year, the university was relocated to the Hugus Ranch property in Pasadena, California. In 1917, the name was changed again to Pasadena University while the university was facing financial difficulties and theological dispute. The name was later modified in 1924 to Pasadena College. In 1949, the college became accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The college moved in 1973 to Point Loma in San Diego occupying the former campus of California Western University. The old campus was then sold to the U.S. Center for World Mission. After campus relocation, the college was named Point Loma College: An Institution of the Church of the Nazarene till 1983 when the name was changed to Point Loma Nazarene College. The university finally got its current name in 1998.

The current location of the university was known before establishing the campus as Lomaland. Prominent buildings on campus include Brown Chapel, Cabrillo Hall, First Church, Cooper Music Center, Mieras Hall and Culbertson Hall. The campus also offers 7 residence halls including Finch, Goodwin and Wiley residence halls. PLNU athletic teams compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Pacific West Conference. The official colors of the university are green and gold while its mascot is called Roary the Sea Lion.

The university offers undergraduate programs in more than 60 areas of study in addition to several graduate degree programs.
