About Pacific Lutheran University
Pacific Lutheran University is a private coeducational liberal arts university located in Parkland, Washington. The university was established in 1890 by Norwegian Lutheran pioneers and got its charter from the state in the same year. The first class started at the university four years later including 30 students. Tuition for the university was initially determined to be $1 per week. In 1898, the name of the college was changed to Pacific Lutheran Academy and Business College. The university continued to operate in a single building, which was known as Old Main, till 1912. By the addition of more building, the name of Old Main was changed to Harstad Hall in honor of the founding president. In 1914, the college received full accreditation allowing students to transfer to other universities without losing credits. The college was temporarily closed in 1918 and reopened two years later after merging with Columbia College. It was then renamed Pacific Lutheran College. It further expanded in 1929 after merging with Spokane College. Pacific Lutheran started offering 4-year baccalaureate degree programs in 1939 and then started offering liberal arts programs 3 years later. The college achieved the university status in 1960 changing its name back to the original name.
The university has a suburban campus covering 156 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Phillip Hauge Administration Building, Mortvedt Library, Ramstad Hall, Xavier Hall, Olson Auditorium, Memorial Gymnasium and Names Fitness Center. The university library, which is known as Mortvedt Library, offers more than 260,000 volumes. Additionally, the campus offers 10 residential halls including Stuen Hall, Ordal Hall, Pflueger Hall, Foss Hall, Tingelstad Hall and Hinderlie Hall. The university athletic teams compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Northwest Conference. The official colors of the university are gold and black while its mascot is the Knight.
The university is divided into schools and colleges. It offers undergraduate programs in 44 majors and 54 minors. Additionally, it offers 7 master’s degree programs and a doctoral degree program. The university is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
