Nova Southeastern University Seal About Nova Southeastern University

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a private non-profit higher education institute located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The university was established and received its charter in 1964 under the name of “Nova University of Advanced Technology”. The first class at the university consisted of 17 students. It was initially located at Fort Lauderdale before moving to its current location in Davie, Florida. The campus was established on the former location of the “Naval Outlying Landing Field Forman”. The airfield was used after the World War II for establishment of the South Florida Education Center. In 1970, the university board decided to enter a federation with the New York Institute of Technology and the name of the university was shortened to “Nova University”. In 1972, the university started offering off-campus courses. In 1985, the university ended its agreement with New York Institute and started offering online courses. In 1994, the university merged with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences changing its name to the current one. In 2014, the university opened a branch campus in Puerto Rico offering masters and doctoral programs.

The university main campus covers 314 acres in Davie, Florida. It includes several distinctive facilities including Don Taft University Center and Alvin Sherman Library which is the largest library in Florida. Additionally, the university has two branch campuses in Dania Beach Campus and North Miami Beach Campus which were opened in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Moreover, the university operates 8 Student Education Centers. The branch campuses along with the student centers cover total area of 150 acres.  The University athletic teams, who are nicknamed Sharks, compete in NCAA Division II as members of the Sunshine State Conference. Their official colors are blue and gray. The university produces student newspaper called “the Current”.

The university is divided into 18 colleges, schools and centers offering 150 degree programs. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
