About Notre Dame de Namur University
Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) is a Catholic private higher education institute operating in the Belmont, California. It was established in 1851 as a female institute named “the Academy of Notre Dame” by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. It was initially located in San Jose, California on a campus covering 10 acres. The college received its charter in 1868 under the name of the College of Notre Dame. It was then the first college in California State approved to grant baccalaureate degree to women. In 1922, the college purchased Ralston Hall in Belmont which formerly belonged to William Chapman Ralston, the founder of the Bank of California. Notre Dame relocated to the new campus in the following year. The college expanded to a four-year college in 1958. It started to offer evening classes three years later. The college was converted into a coeducational institute in 1967. Five years later, the college started offering graduate programs granting master’s degrees. In 2001, the name of the college got its current after it was reorganized by establishing 4 schools. In 2009, NDNU became a Hispanic serving institute by admitting 25% of its students from Hispanic people. In 2012, the university started offering online degree programs. In the following year, Notre Dame was the first institute in the United States to offer doctoral program in art therapy. In 2015, the university opened a branch campus in Tracy.
The university campus is located in Silicon Valley covering 50 acres. It contains several distinctive buildings including Ralston Hall Mansion which is the oldest building on campus. It was decided in 2012 to close the building because it was considered unsafe in the event of an earthquake. Other important buildings include Cuvilly Hall and the university theatre which is located close to the university campus on Ralston Avenue.
The University offers 18 undergraduate and 10 graduate programs. Some programs are also offered online or in evening classes. In 2016, the university terminated 6 programs.
