About Northwest Florida State College
Northwest Florida State College is a public higher education institute that is a member of the Florida College System. The college was established in 1963 under the name of “Okaloosa-Walton Junior College”. Classes started in the following year at the college which was located at that time in Valparaiso, Florida. Five years later, the college relocated to its current campus in Niceville. In 1988, the name of the college was changed to Okaloosa-Walton Community College. In 2000, the college opened a high school department called the Collegiate High School at Northwest Florida State College. It became a four-year college in 2003 changing its name to Okaloosa-Walton College. In 2008, the college became part of the Florida College Pilot Project making it one of the state colleges. Accordingly, the name of the college was changed again to its current name.
The college main campus is located Niceville covering 264 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Gallimore Center for Healthcare Education, Robert E. Greene, Jr. Science Building and Raider Arena. The campus also hosts Mattie Kelly Arts Center which was built at the cost of $25 million. It offers a 1,650 seat Mainstage theater, a 195-seat, flexible Sprint Theater and two galleries. The college athletic teams, who are nicknamed Raiders, compete in the Panhandle Conference of the Florida State College Activities Association. The college official colors are red, white and black. Additionally, the college has a branch campus and 4 off-campus centers including Fort Walton Beach Campus, Chautauqua Center, Robert LF Sikes Center and Hurlburt Field Center.
The college offers 8 degree programs in more than 60 majors in addition to non-degree and college credit courses. It grants bachelor and associate degrees. The Collegiate High School department allows students in the last three years of high school to continue their studies and earn college credits at the same time.
