Northeastern State University Seal About Northeastern State University

Northeastern State University (NSU) is a public university located at the foot of the Ozark Mountains in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The university was established in 1851 making it the first higher education institute to be established west of the Mississippi River. The university was established by the Cherokee Nation under the name of “National Female Seminary at Tahlequah”. In 1909, the State Legislature of Oklahoma approved the establishment of Northeastern State Normal School at Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The legislature purchased the land, building and equipment of the Cherokee Female Seminary for the establishment of the school from the Cherokee Tribal Government. In 1921, the school was recognized as a four year college changing its name to Northeastern State Teachers College. The college later expanded into a comprehensive higher education institute offering liberal arts studies. In 1974, the college started offering graduate degree programs changing its name to Northeastern State College. In 1985, the college achieved the university status changing its name to the current one.

The university campus covers more than 200 acres on the former location of the Cherokee Female Seminary. The former building of the seminary is currently named the Seminary Hall and is used as an academic building. Other important buildings on campus include the W. Roger Webb Educational Technology Center, Bagley Hall, John Vaughan Library and the CASE Building. The campus offers 9 residential halls including Haskell Hall, Hastings Hall, Isabell Cobb Hall, Logan Hall, North Leoser complex, South Leoser complex and Wyly Hall. Additionally, the university operates several branch locations. These include Muskogee campus which was opened in 1993 on 23 acres and Broken Arrow campus which was opened in 2002. The university athletic teams, who are nicknamed RiverHawks, compete in NCAA Division II as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The official colors of the university are gray and green.

The university is divided into 5 colleges offering 69 undergraduate, 18 graduate and 13 pre-professional programs.
