Niagara University Seal About Niagara University

Niagara University is a Vincentian Roman Catholic University located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo in Niagara County, New York. The university is administered by the Congregation of the Mission. The university was established in 1856 and was initially located in Buffalo, New York under the name of “Our Lady of Angels Seminary”. The seminary was relocated in the following year to its current location. In 1863, the college received its charter from the New York Legislature recognizing it as a degree-granting college. In 1883, the college name was changed to “Niagara University”. All of the university presidents till now are Vincentian priests.

The university states its mission is to prepare students to hold prominent positions in the professions and in the broader society seeking to develop passion for learning within the students.

The university has a suburban campus located in Lewiston, New York. The university offers several residential options to the students including 5 residential halls, the Varsity Village which consists of 6 community houses in addition to on-campus student apartments. Residence halls include Lynch Hall, O’Donoughue Hall, Clet Hall and O’Shea Hall. The campus hosts several events including concerts and weekly late-night events. Moreover, the campus is the home to the only collecting museum in Niagara County, Castellani Art Museum, which hosts exhibitions contemporary artists and traditional folk arts. It also hosts a permanent of 5,700 art works. The university used to publish a newspaper that continued starting 1870 till 2012 and was named “the Niagara Index”. The university broadcasts an online radio station named WNIA.

The university is divided into 4 colleges. First year students are allowed to move between these colleges till deciding their future study. The university is ranked among top 50 colleges in the North Region and among the top 50 Catholic universities in the United States.
