New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Seal About New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) is a public higher education institute located in Socorro, New Mexico. It was established in 1889 by the New Mexico Territorial Legislature with the aim of supporting the local economy and providing college education specialized in mining. In the 1930s, the college started also offering programs in petroleum technology and engineering. It started offering graduate degree programs in 1946 gaining its current name 5 years later; however, this name was legally approved only in 1960 through an amendment of the New Mexico State Constitution. In 2003, the institute purchased the company town, Playas, to use it as a research and training facility. The college has achieved several high rankings as it was ranked 12th among America’s Best Value Colleges in 2010 by the Princeton Review and was ranked as ” Best Engineering College for the Money” in 2017 by College Factual. The institute has appeared in episodes shown by several channels including BBC Horizon, National Geographic Explorer, MythBusters, and Nova. New Mexico Tech is designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education which opens more chances to scholarships for its students.

New Mexico Tech has a rural campus covering 320 acres. It offers several distinctive buildings and facilities including Altamirano Apartments, Baca Hall, Brown Hall, Cramer Hall, Desert Willow Apartments, Driscoll Hall, Fidel Center and Jones Hall.

The institute is divided into 17 academic departments offering 21 bachelor degree programs, an associate degree program, 16 master’s degree programs, 13 doctoral degree programs in addition to 3 certificate programs. There are 9 research centers affiliated to the institute including Langmuir Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, Magdalena Ridge Observatory, and National Cave and Karst Research Institute. New Mexico Tech is by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
