New Jersey Institute of Technology Seal About New Jersey Institute of Technology

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research higher education institute located in Newark, New Jersey. The college was established in 1881 by a group of inventors and industrialists including Edward Weston. It was initially named Newark Technical School. The first class started at the school three years later and included 88 students who were taught in a rented place. The school started construction of its first building in 1886 which was later called Colton Hall. By 1930, the college expanded into a conventional engineering school and its name was accordingly changed to Newark College of Engineering. In 1973, a school of architecture was added to the college making it a technology university under its current name.  In 1979, the college opened its first residential hall which is named Redwood Hall. In 2013, the college campus received negative rating when it was ranked by Princeton Review as the least beautiful campus in the United States as it contains mishmash of architectural styles.

The institute has an urban campus covering 48 acres in Newark, New Jersey. It includes several distinctive buildings and facilities including Campbell Hall, Central King Building, Cullimore Hall, Cypress Residence Hall, Dorman Honors Residence Hall, Eberhardt Hall, Fenster Hall, Fleischer Athletic Center, Kupfrian Hall, Guttenberg Information Technology Center, Laurel Residence Hall and York Center. Significant facilities on campus include class 100 and class 1000 cleanrooms for educational and research purposes, a solar observatory in addition to a 67-node supercomputer. The university athletic teams, who are nicknamed the Highlanders, compete the NCAA-Division I as members of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The official colors of the university are red, white and blue.

The university is divided into 21 departments and 6 colleges including Newark College of Engineering, Ying Wu College of Computing Sciences, Martin Tuchman School of Management and Albert Dorman Honors College. It offers 51 bachelor degree programs and 76 graduate degree programs granting master’s and doctoral degrees.
