New Jersey City University Seal About New Jersey City University

New Jersey City University is a public higher education institute located in Jersey City, New Jersey. It was established in 1929 and was initially named the New Jersey State Normal School at Jersey City. The name of the college was changed in 1935 to New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City before being changed again in 1958 to Jersey City State College. In 1958, the college expanded its academic programs by becoming a liberal arts college. Thirty years later, the college achieved the university status as approved by the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education and accordingly, the college gained its current name.

The university states that its mission is to encourage the community diversity, benefiting from the surrounding community assets and solving its challenges. The university has an urban campus covering 46 acres. Its centerpiece is Hepburn Hall which is a Gothic building designed by Guilbert and Betelle and opened in 1930. Other important buildings on campus include Karnoutsos Hall which is known by the students as the Crayola building because of its external colors as well as Frank J. Guarini Library. The college offers 4 residence halls including Co-op Hall and Vodra Hall. The university athletic teams, who are nicknamed Gothic Knights, compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III. Its official colors are green and gold. The university operates Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex that is located at Newark Bay less than a mile away from the main campus.

The university is divided into 4 colleges and schools including William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences, Deborah Cannon Partridge Wolfe College of Education and a college for professional studies. The college offers 41 undergraduate degree programs and 27 graduate degree programs. It grants bachelor and master’s degrees besides offering certificate non-degree programs.
