About Nazareth College
Nazareth College (Naz) is a private coeducational Christian independent college located in Rochester, New York. The college was established in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to fulfill the request made by Bishop Thomas Francis Hickey. The first class consisting of 25 female students was held in a large mansion known as “the Glass House” located in Rochester, New York. The college expanded in 1928 by relocating in 1928 to a larger campus at Augustine Street. It relocated again in 1942 to its present campus in Pittsford suburb. The 1970s witnessed several changes to the college as it became a coeducational institute and added intercollegiate sports. During the same period, the college became independent of the Roman Catholic Church. In the 2000s, the college increased the size of its campus to the double by purchasing land from the Sisters of St. Joseph which included the former Infirmary and Motherhouse. In 2003, the college was considered no longer Catholic or religious institute as declared by Rochester Bishop Matthew H. Clark and was accordingly removed from The Official Catholic Directory. In 2013, the college became member of the Clinton Global Initiative University Network which support researcher seeking solutions to the most critical problems in the world.
The college campus currently covers 150 acres and includes 24 buildings. Distinctive buildings on campus include the Golisano Academic Center, formerly known as the Motherhouse, is the largest and oldest facility on campus. The campus also includes state of the art science lab hosted at Peckham Hall that led to the college being ranked 20th in the United States. Other important buildings include George Hall, Portka Hall, Clock Tower Commons, and the Lyons and Breen apartment buildings. The campus offers 11 residential halls to the students. Nazareth athletic teams, who are nicknamed Golden Flyers, compete in NCAA Division III. Its official colors are purple and gold.
