About Musicians Institute
Musicians Institute (MI) is a for-profit private higher education institute offering undergraduate programs focusing on contemporary music. The institute was established as a 1-year vocational school in 1977 and was named “The Guitar Institute of Technology”. The school was cofounded by Pat Hicks who developed the organizational structure of the school along with the guitarist Howard Roberts who developed its academic programs. Howard aimed at providing a conservatory experience to rock and roll musicians. Six academic programs were introduced during the administration of Roberts and Hicks. In 1994, the ownership of the college was transferred to the Japanese Businessman Hisatake Shibuya. He then introduced 5 more programs to the college.
The campus has an urban campus in Hollywood that provides more than 180,000 square feet consisting of adjoining buildings. The campus was developed in the period between 2010 to 2013 costing $47 million. The campus includes five institutes including Musicians Institute, Theatre of Arts, Elegance International, International Dance Academy and Los Angeles College of Music.
The institute offers 7 associate programs, 4 bachelor programs in addition to 10 certificate programs. It is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The institute has partnership agreements with MI Japan, UTB Video Academy and ESP Entertainment. It also allows course transfer from Los Angeles City College. Students enrolled at the institute as well as those newly joining are offered scholarships that can provide financial support.
