Mount Saint Mary College About Mount Saint Mary College

Mount Saint Mary College (the Mount) is a private coeducational college for liberal arts. It was established by the Dominican Sisters in 1927. The college initially operated as a high school under the name Greater Mount Saint Mary academy. Three years later, the academy was recognized as a normal and training school by the New York State Education Department. In 1934, the academy was granted full approval to grant teaching certificates after a 3-year program. In 1955, the college got a provisional charter to offer 3-year associate degree program and the charter was amended in 1959. In the following year, the college started offering 4-year college programs and granted the first bachelor degree in 1962. Six years later, the college received full accreditation from the Middle States Association and became a coeducational institute at the same year. Mount Saint Mary started offering the first master’s degree program in 1984. Seven years later, Alice Curtis Desmond donated her estate to the college which was used as a branch campus. The college started a fund raising campaign named “Answering the Call” which aimed at collecting $10 million. The collected amount was used to construct the Kaplan Family Center and Aquinas Hall which was opened in 2007.

Mount Saint Mary campus is located in Newburgh, New York overlooking the Hudson River. The campus covers 44 acres with several distinctive buildings as Sakac Hall, Guzman Hall, Hudson Hall, The William and Elaine Kaplan Recreation Center and Whittaker Hall. The college athletic teams, who are nicknamed Knights, compete in the Eastern College Athletic Conference and the Skyline Conference as members of NCAA Division III. Its official color is the blue.

The Mount offers more than 60 undergraduate programs in addition to several graduate programs. It grants bachelor and master’s degrees. The college is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
