Mills College Seal About Mills College

Mills College is a private liberal arts college for women. It was established by Mary Atkins in 1852. It initially operated in Benicia, California under the name of Young Ladies Seminary. In 1865, the college was renamed Mills Seminary when Cyrus Mills and his wife Susan Tolman Mills purchased it. The college relocated six years later to Oakland. It was recognized as a college in 1885. The college started in 1906 to gradually eliminate the seminary classes. The college started offering its first graduate program in 1921 granting master’s degree. In 1990, the board of trustees decided to accept in the enrollment of male students, however, the decision was faced by non-violent strikes and protests of the staff and the students till the decision was cancelled. In 2014, Mills college was the first female institute to announce clearly accepting transgender students. Graduate programs at the college are coeducational.

Mills campus covers 135 acres offering several distinctive buildings and facilities. These include Betty Irene Moore Natural Sciences Building that was established in 2007 to offer unique facilities as the Scheffler Bio-Imaging Center. Other important facilities include Center for Contemporary Music which moved to the campus in 1966 and F.W. Olin Library hosting more than 240,000 volumes and other media. The campus offers 10 residential halls including Warren Olney Hall, Orchard Meadow Hall, Ethel Moore Hall, Mary Morse Hall and Lynn Townsend White Hall. The college athletic teams, who are nicknamed Cyclones, compete as members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III.

The college offers undergraduate programs in more than 60 majors in addition to 25 graduate programs offering masters and doctoral degrees. Mills also offers accelerated bachelor to masters programs. Moreover, the college has several credential, pre-professional and certificates programs. Mills has been ranked among top universities in the western region by U.S. News & World Report. It was ranked among top 10 masters’ colleges by Washington Monthly. The college is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
