Menlo College Seal About Menlo College

Menlo College is a four-year college offering studies focusing on industries located in the Silicon Valley town of Atherton, California. The college was established in 1927 when the Menlo School of Boys expanded by forming a junior college for male students. The college faced significant financial difficulties caused by the the 1929 stock market crash which nearly caused the closure of the institute two years later. Loans from Board Chairman C. F. Michaels in addition to land grant provided by the Town of Atherton helped keep the college operating. In 1932, the board of trustees of Stanford University rejected a proposal from Menlo College to act as Stanford’s lower division institution hosting its students during their first two academic years. During the World War II, the college adopted a four-four admission plan that admitted students of grades 7 to 10 at the School while students of grades 11 to 14 are admitted to college. The college initiated its first four-year academic program in business administration in 1949 which was coinciding with the decision of Stanford University to terminate its similar undergraduate program. In 1954, the college established Howard and Michaels Residence Halls which were named in honor of Dr. Lowry Howard and C. F. Michaels. In the following year, the college received a donation of seven houses from the Hewlett-Packard Company which were assigned to faculty members. In 1956, Florence Moore provided the required funds for the establishment of the Florence Moore Science and Engineering Building. Melno College became a coeducational institute in 1971. Five years, the college started fund-raising campaign aiming at collecting $5 million. In 2008, the college received its largest donation at a value of $21.3 million from the Hope Bartnett Belloc Trust.

Menlo campus covers 45 acres offering several distinctive buildings as Bowman Library, Brawner Hall, Cartan Athletic Fields, El Camino Hall, Florence Moore Building, Haynes-Prim Pavilion, Howard Hall, Kratt Hall, Michaels Hall and Russell Center. The official colors of the university are blue and white. Its athletic teams, who are nicknamed Oaks, compete in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
