Lake-Sumter State College About Lake-Sumter State College

Lake–Sumter State College (LSSC) is a state college in Central Florida founded in 1961 by Florida Legislature authorization under the name of Lake-Sumter Junior College (LSJC) for white citizens. In parallel, they established Johnson Junior College for black citizens. LSSC is currently part of the Florida College System. LSJC students started classes in 1962 in modular buildings on the Leesburg High School campus. The college was headed by Dr. Paul P. Williams as the College’s first president. In 1965, LSJC was authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges Commission to transfer credits received from LSJC to other regionally accredited institutions. In 1970, LSJC was renamed to Lake-Sumter Community College (LSCC) as a result of the Florida Legislature’s establishment of a Division of Community Colleges. On November 2012, The District Board of Trustees agreed to rename the college to Lake-Sumter State College. Two years later, a great step occurred when Lake-Sumter State College, South Lake Hospital, Montverde Academy, Lake County Public Schools, and the University of Central Florida cooperated to establish the Health Sciences Collegiate Academy, introducing rigorous STEM and health sciences condensed curriculum to South Lake students in grades from 9 to 12. The college teaches in three campuses  in Lake and Sumter Counties; the original campus in Leesburg, the Sumter Campus in Sumterville, and the South Lake Campus in Clermont.

LSSC’s motto is “Where Futures Soar”. The college campus currently covers more than 130 acres offering several distinctive facilities as Williams-Johnson Administration Building, Lake Hall, Everett A. Kelly Convocation Center, Paul P. Williams Fine Arts Center and Building M. The college competes in the Mid-Florida Conference of the Florida State College Activities Association (FSCAA) as a Division 1 program.  The college’s mascot is Lakehawks, while the official college colors are blue and green.

Lake–Sumter State Colleges offers Associate of Applied Science degrees, Associate of Arts degrees,  Associate of Science degrees, technical and vocational certificates, and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Organizational Management. Lake-Sumter is authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to grant associate and baccalaureate degrees.
