About Kaplan University
Kaplan University started in 1938 when Stanley Kaplan started tutoring students in the basement of his home. Around 1945, universities started to rely more on standardized tests for admission and Kaplan courses were helping students prepare for these tests and improve their scores. Thirty years later, the preparation courses were legally recognized. In 1984, the Kaplan Inc. which owned more than 100 centers was purchased by the Graham Holdings Company. Kaplan opened its first center outside US in 1993. Three years later, Kaplan acquired Score Learning Inc. which was later called Kaplan Kids providing online learning and after school tutoring services for children. In 1999, the school was selected by the U.S. Department of Education among 15 schools to receive a grant that allows offering online programs. In 2000, Kaplan became a higher education institute by the acquisition of Quest Education Corporation which consists of a network of career colleges. In 2017, Purdue University purchased Kaplan University changing it to a non-profit organization. The University currently has 14 campuses in Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Missouri and Wisconsin in addition to a university learning center in Maryland.
The university is mainly focused on distant learning. It is divided into 8 main divisions granting more than 12,000 degrees and certificates per year. Kaplan relies on competence based education which allows the university to award credits to students who demonstrate that they fulfilled certain learning outcomes through professional or military training. The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
