About Jacksonville University
Jacksonville University is a private university that is a member of the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida. It was established in 1934 as a two year institute named William J. Porter University after its founder. The name was changed in the following year to Jacksonville Junior College. In 1947, the college purchased a land in Jacksonville’s Arlington neighborhood to establish its current campus. The campus was opened and classes started in it in 1950. In 1956, the college decided to establish four-year degree programs changing its name to its current one. The first student graduated from the university programs three years later. In 1958, the college merged with the Jacksonville College of Music changing its name to Jacksonville University. In 1990s, the university reorganized itself to become a liberal arts college.
The university has a waterfront campus covering 250 acres with 63 buildings with several distinctive facilities and buildings as Alexander Brest Museum and Gallery, Fowler Building, Gooding Building, Howard Administration Building, Reid Medical Science Center, Merritt Penticoff Science Building, Swisher Library, Sam R. Marks Chapel, Delius House, Terry Concert Hall as well as Botts Hall, Johnson Hall, Brest Hall and Williams Hall which are residential halls. The official colors of the university are forest green and white while its mascot is the dolphin. Its athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I, Pioneer Football League, Atlantic Sun Conference and Southern Conference.
The university is divided into 4 colleges and 2 institutes including the Davis College of Business and the Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences. Jacksonville offers undergraduate and graduate programs in more than 70 majors granting bachelor, masters and pre-professional degrees. There are also 6 online programs granting master’s degrees. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
