Holy Names University Seal About Holy Names University

Holy Names University (HNU) is a Roman Catholic Church affiliated private co-educational institute that is located in Oakland City in California State. It is managed by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. HNU was established in 1868 by six members of the Sisters of the Holy Names, a spiritual teaching corporation from Quebec in Canada. Father Michael King, a pastor from Saint Mary’s Church invited Holy Names sisters to inaugurate girls school specialized in training teachers. It was originally founded as the Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on Lake Merritt shores. The Convent started to open post-secondary courses in 1908, thus its name was changed to be the College of the Holy Names. The graduate programs were launched in 1955. In 1957, Henry J. Kaiser, a famous industrialist and the father of shipbuilding purchased the college’s site. Consequently, the college moved to its current location in Oakland Hills. The college was renamed again in 1974 to be Holy Names College (HNC) when it was changed to be a co-educational institute at the undergraduate level. Finally, HNC was renamed again to Holy Names University in 2004 based on its programs expansion. Since then, it has been known to be the newest Catholic university in California.

HNU mission is to promote spiritual aspects, critical thinking and intellectual skills among students besides providing them with the educational services, experimental and research experiences.

HNU campus occupies around sixty-acre land on Oakland Hills and only 2.5 miles far away from the Montclair district. It has several distinctive buildings that were designed by Milton T. Pflueger as Michael and Maureen Hester Administration, the Paul J. Cushing Library, the Tobin Gymnasium, and McLean Chapel. The university athletic teams who are called the Hawks compete in the Pacific West Conference of NCAA Division II.

HNU offers 20 undergraduate programs, 9 master’s programs, 6 certificate degrees, and 4 adult undergraduate degree completion programs. It is ranked to be one of the best 100 colleges in the western region in the United States in 2017 according to U.S. World News and Reports.
