Hofstra University Seal About Hofstra University

Hofstra University is a private coeducational non-profit higher education institute located in Long Island in the village of Hempstead, New York. It was established in 1935 as part of New York University. The land and estate for the campus were donated by Kate Mason to establish Hofstra college in honor of her husband; William S. Hofstra. The first classes in the university started in 1935 and got its provisional charter two years later. In 1939, the college became independent from New York University to get an absolute charter in the following year. The college was recognized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in 1940 and became a member of the American Association of Colleges. In 1963, Hofstra became the first private university in Long Island. It was pioneer in designing its architecture to remove all barriers facing people with physical disabilities which later became a federal law. In the same year, the university took part of the closed Mitchel Air Force Base to be used for educational purposes. Hofstra started to offer doctoral degrees for the first time in 1966.

The university campus covers around 240 acres with a collection of diverse trees and colorful tulips. The university has 25 centers and research institutes operating in various fields as Hofstra University Museum, Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center, Long Island Studies Institute, Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency, Scott Skodnek Business Development Center and Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies. The official colors of the university are blue, white and gold.

The university is divided into 13 schools and colleges including Peter S. Kalikow School of Government, Public Policy, and International Affairs, Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science and Maurice A. Deane School of Law. The college has full accreditation for 24 academic areas. It has been ranked 133th among US universities by U.S. News & World Report in 2017.
