Hobart William Smith Colleges Seal About Hobart William Smith Colleges

Hobart and William Smith Colleges are two related private liberal arts colleges located on the same campus in Geneva, New York. Hobart College is dedicated to male students while William Smith College serves female students. The two colleges are collectively called The Colleges of the Seneca. The establishment of the colleges dates back to 1797 with the establishment of the Geneva Academy which was closed in 1817 due to disagreements within its administration. The college was reopened in 1822 under the name of Geneva College as a college for men. The college got its full charter in 1825 from the State Regents of New York. Nine years later, the college founded Geneva Medical College as a separate college. However, the medical college was closed in 1871 and its assets was sold to Dean John Towler. The name of the college was changed in 1852 to Hobart College whose efforts led to the reopening of the academy. William Smith College was established in 1908 as a sister college for women. William College remained as a department of Hobart College till 1943 when it was recognized as an independent institute equal to Hobart College.

The colleges’ campus covers 170 acres overlooking the Seneca Lake having Jacobean and Gothic architectural styles.
