Gallaudet University Seal About Gallaudet University

Gallaudet University is a private university located in Washington, D.C. whose aim is educating deaf and people with difficulties in hearing. It was established by Edward Miner Gallaudet in 1856. A land with an area of 2 acres donated by Amos Kendall, a postmaster general and a  philanthropist, to found a grammar school for accommodating and educating people with vision and hearing disabilities. A year later, Kendall was successfully able to incline the Congress to consolidate Columbia Institute, the new school for educating blind, dumb and deaf people. Edward Miner Gallaudet was selected as the first executive for “Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf, Dumb and Blind”. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill of agreement through which Columbia Institute was licensed to grant college degrees. In 1869, the first three students were granted their diplomas during the first commencement held by Gallaudet. Since the first commencement up till now, the diplomas of Gallaudet haven been signed by the U.S. President. In 1894, Colombia Institute changed its college portion name to be Gallaudet College after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, a hard hearing person and a memorable figure in educating deaf people. In 1954, the whole institution changed its name to Gallaudet College. Gallaudet expanded to include Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD) and Kendall Demonstration Elementary School in 1969 and 1970 respectively. On October 1986, Gallaudet was granted a university status to change its name into Gallaudet University.

Gallaudet University was the first school in the world offering sophisticated education for hard hearing and deaf people. It remains the only higher educational institute in the world whose all programs are designed to be able to admit deaf and hard hearing people.

Gallaudet University offers more than 20 undergraduate degrees with more than 20 majors and 10 minors. In addition, it offers around 20 graduate degrees.
