Florida Institute of Technology Seal About Florida Institute of Technology

Florida institute of Technology, commonly known as Florida Tech or FIT, is a private research based university. It is located in Melbourne, Florida. FIT was established by Dr. Jerome P. Keuper as Brevard Engineering College in 1958. Former buildings in Melbourne Municipal Airport, previously used by the Naval Air Station Melbourne, were used to conduct classes for almost three years. Later on, the university moved to its current location in Melbourne, Florida. During the 1960s, several classrooms, laboratories, the Denius Student Center, a library, dormitories, Gleason Auditorium and Hedgecock Gymnasium were established. Brevard Engineering College changed its name officially to Florida Institute of Technology in 1966. The year 1990 witnessed the opening of The Claude Pepper Institute for Aging and Therapeutic Research and Skurla Hall, home of the School of Aeronautics. Florida Tech was granted an amount of 50 million dollars from the F. W. Olin Foundation to establish both engineering and life sciences buildings which were opened in 1999. The establishment of many research centers took place from 2005 till 2016.

FIT main campus occupies 130 acres along the Space Coast region of the Atlantic Ocean. It has a unique location since it is near Florida Tech Research Park and Melbourne International Airport. Besides the main campus, FIT has Jensen Beach Campus that includes the School of Marine and Environmental Technology (SOMET) which is almost 50 miles away from the main campus. FGCU campus occupies around 760 acres between Alico and Corkscrew Roads at the east side of Interstate 75.

The institute mission is to achieve academic excellence helping students realize their career goals, target higher educational opportunities and serve their society. It aims at providing the community with well-prepared graduates to fulfill the national and international needs.

FIT is ranked by Times Higher Education as the 219th among the national universities and one of the top 800 over the world. It offers more than 60 undergraduate degrees, more than 100 master’s and doctoral degrees, and several online programs. FIT consists of 7 colleges and a school among them is the Nathan M. Bisk College of Business.
