Florida Gulf Coast University Seal About Florida Gulf Coast University

Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is a public high educational institute that is located in Fort Myers, Lee County, Florida. It was established as a state university to provide high educational services to southwestern area of Florida. Board of Regents in Florida recommended inauguration of FGCU as the tenth state university in Florida in 1991, then selected its site which was a gift from Ben Hill Griffin III and Alico in 1992. In April 1993, Roy McTarnaghan was selected to be the founding president of the new university. Plans for campus construction started in February 1994 and in the same year the university got its name by the Florida Legislature. On March 1996, the Board of Regents approved the inaugural academic programs. The first class was accepted in January 1997 and the operation of classes started in August 1997. The campus occupies around 760 acres between Alico and Corkscrew Roads at the east side of Interstate 75.

FGCU mission is to provide students with superior educational services at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It intends to achieve academic privilege in the development of science and technology based academic programs and research centers. The students are prepared by their faculty members to be fruitful, creative and reliable citizens capable of serving Southwest Florida and beyond.

FGCU is ranked as the first-tier university in the region. Also, its business school is selected to be one of the top 301 business schools in the U.S. by Princeton Reviews. FGCU curriculum has a unique requirement for graduation which is attending the University Colloquium. It was established in an ecologically sensitive area within the campus and aiming at teaching student the significance of ecology and preservation.

FGCU offers 51 undergraduate degrees, 29 master’s degrees and 6 doctoral degrees through 8 colleges and schools. Some of the outstanding schools in FGCU are Bower School of Music & the Arts, Lutgert College of Business, and U. A. Whitaker College of Engineering.
