Elmira is a private and coeducational higher education institute that was founded in year 1855 as a women’s college, Elmira Female College. Its origin goes back to year 1851 when a group of men with a vision for an educational institute for women struggled to make it happen and eventually established it. Entering 19th century, the college started offering Masters degree program and by 1969 became a coeducational institute.

Located in Elmira, New York, the college was the first women’s institute worldwide to be offering education for women at the same level as that available to men. With its dedication towards liberation and academic pursuit, the college continues to offer intellectual and moral excellence, professional development as well as character formation.

Life at Elmira is dedicated to promoting student welfare and healthy development. For skill development, learning and character growth, the college offers more than 100 student led clubs and organisations. These serve as learning platforms as well as leadership opportunities offering academic, arts, political groups, honor societies, advisory groups and others. The Student Government plays an active role in improving the campus life, serving as representative bodies and working for student interests. There is also active spiritual life through faith based groups and activities. Students also bring arts and creative performances. The campus also holds events all year round which help with students enjoy their time and make friendship bonds that last even after their journey with Elmira has ended. Similarly, there are athletic events as well, where the campus team take part at NCAA Empire 8 and others. The college mascot is ‘Soaring Eagle’.

The academic programs offered at Elmira consist of undergraduate programs with 32 majors and minors, two pre professional programs, two Masters degree programs and advanced certificate programs. Its notable facilities are Center for Mark Twain Studies, Gannett-Tripp Library, Murray Athletic Center, Watson Fine Arts, Clarke Health Center, Gillett Memorial Hall, Tompkins Hall and others.
