Eckerd College About Eckerd College

Eckerd is a four year higher education institute which was founded by Florida Synod of the Presbyterian Church after it gained charter for the Florida Presbyterian College by the Florida Legislature in 1958. The classes at the college began in year 1960. In year 1966, the college gained accreditation and as it further grew, the control of the college was handed over to the Board of Trustees.

It was in 1972, upon receiving a huge endowment from Jack Eckerd, member of Board of Trustees, that the college was renamed in his honor as Eckerd College. Based in St. Petersburg, Florida, the college is committed to providing quality liberal arts education which builds students to be innovative and reach for excellence in their endeavors in life.

Campus life at Eckerd College is filled with activities and programs that contribute greatly to its student’s physical, mental, intellectual and personal development. Students are actively engaged in spiritual development through campus ministries which offers fellowships, Mass, meditation, lectures and also space to non Christian students to practice their faith. Through this spiritual development, students also get opportunities to connect with each other. This is further endorsed as students find over 120 student led clubs and organisations where they learn with each other and form relationships. There is also the multicultural center which aims to bring people with diverse backgrounds together for creating an inclusive campus life and improving intellectual perspective. The college also works towards improving sustainability by ensuring LEED Certified buildings, and imparting conservation and preservation education through activities. Students are also active in serving the community by volunteering their hours; the students have their own emergency response team as well. For recreation there are intramurals and club sports, with college also having its athletic teams called ‘Tritons’ and participating at NCAA Division II. The campus colors are Teal, Navy, and Black.

At Eckerd the programs offered are undergraduate programs with over 30 majors, 48 minors and several pre professional programs. Its prominent facilities are Peter H. Armacost Library, Wireman Chapel and Binninger Theatre.
