About CUNY Medgar Evers College
MEC is a public senior college with the City University of New York (CUNY) system. It is the youngest of all the institutes at CUNY and was founded after a need was expressed by local community members felt the need for a public college for the Brooklyn community. By 1967 the proposal was taken up by the Board of Higher Education and by 1969 approved a four year professional studies college. In the year 1970, one year later the college was established.
The college has been named Medgar Evers College, after the assassinated African American civil rights leader Medgar Wiley Evers. Based in New York City, New York, the college serves its original purpose of providing educational and social needs, helping its students craft successful careers and follow their passion.
Campus life at MEC is the perfect mix of study and play as it brings activities which incorporate learning as well as bring social elements to the student life. Office of Student Life & Development at the campus aims to bring more student involvement at the campus. It brings the Student Government Association, which act as the student leaders and liaison on campus making the relations between students and faculty better and also working to bring activities and events for the students. There are also student led clubs providing varying interests and social and learning opportunities. The student office also brings formal leadership education for students to learn the skill and gain experience. As students are encouraged for leadership, they are also provided with community service projects and programs to serve the off campus community. Students put in volunteering hours for civic engagement activities. The college also has its athletic teams which are a member with the NCAA Division III.
The academic programs offered at MEC are baccalaureate and associate degrees, organised in four schools, School of Business, School of Liberal Arts and Education, School of Science, Health and Technology and School of Professional and Community Development.
