GC is a public research center and is the doctoral granting institute of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. The school was founded as the CUNY began to offer doctorate degrees in the year 1961 and this opened as a division for graduate studies. It was later in 1969 that it was made into a separate center and given its present name.

Located in New York City, New York, the Graduate School and University Center was developed on the lines of promoting research and scholarship activities and so remains to be the institute combining faculty, experts and students involved in educational endeavours and preparing leaders and scholars in various professional spheres.

The campus student life is as diverse and engaging as the academic opportunities provided however, being a graduate school with the intense focus on doctoral and research work, it understands the responsibility of training students for scholarly work in both private and public sphere. The campus resources are strictly dedicated to scholarly work and there are more than 30 centers dedicated to research and programming activities in various fields. There is also Advanced Research Collaborative (ARC) which works as a global collaborative space bringing faculty and prominent scholars together and working on interdisciplinary research activities. Similarly, there is also Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) which is dedicated specifically to science, which became part of GC in 2017 and since then has been committed to bringing groundbreaking research work in the field of science. Besides preparing for work, the school also prepares its students for career opportunities. Office of Career Planning and Professional Development advises on job opportunities helps with resumes, interview preparation and helps plan out the perfect career.

The programs offered at GC are eight Masters degree programs and Doctoral programs in 31 disciplines. The prominent facilities and departments are Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, Macaulay Honors College, Barry S. Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation, Howard Samuels Center, Saul Kripke Center, Martin E. Segal Theatre Center and many more.
