CCNY is a public institute and part of the City University of New York (CUNY). It traces its beginning to Free Academy, which was founded in the year 1847 by Townsend Harris, a businessman and president of the Board of Education, with the aim of providing education to the children of middle class and immigrant families. The college is based in New York City, New York.

City College has incorporated the ideals of change, research, intellectual discovery, innovation and critical thinking into its foundational values. It aims to transfer these onto its students with the aim of producing leaders who are prepared to take on global challenges and match the fast paced developments.

For the students, CCNY is a place where they embark on a new journey, make new connections and find new experiences. Students find plenty of opportunities where they are meet new people, learn new things and grow in a different way. Presently there are more than 200 student clubs and organisations, providing a range of interests to choose from. There are also Fraternities and Sororities and also an honor society, National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) present on campus. Besides learning to collaborate with each other through these organisations, the students also take up leadership duties through the programs, CityServ and SEEDS. Through SEEDS, the college brings activities, workshops and retreats where students learn about leadership roles and responsibilities and also learn about serving the community and working for social justice. Similarly there is CityServ where students connect with the community by serving them. There are college athletic teams ‘Beavers’ taking part at NCAA Division III. The college colors are Lavender and Black and the mascot is ‘Beaver’.

At CCNY there are more than 70 undergraduate programs and more than 50 graduate programs. Its prominent departments and facilities are Colin Powell School, The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, Grove School of Engineering, Shepard Hall, Steinman Hall and a few more.
