Culinary Institute of America About Culinary Institute of America

CIA is a private non profit culinary education institute providing education in the field of culinary, pastry arts and baking. The foundation of the institute was laid down by two women, Frances Roth, pioneer in culinary education, with working experience in a restaurant, and Katharine Angell. The two women set up New Haven Restaurant Institute in 1946 and began providing education in what was the first of its kind institute in the country.

After WWII, with many returning veterans enrolling at the institute, it found success and came to be as Culinary Institute of America in 1951. The institute remains committed to producing professionals with not only highest professional standard but also ethical conduct and innovators and leaders in their field.

At CIA, students are connected with world class professionals in their respective fields, providing them with real world exposure and highest work standards from day one. The students work as a close knit community of learners, sharing experiences, learning from each other and being connected through food. All of the CIA campuses provide resources for education, creativity, research as well as extracurricular activities. The college has four campuses, New York, California, Texas and in Singapore. Its New York campus provides over 30 students clubs, plenty of entertainment and activities, intercollegiate athletic teams, guest visits by Chefs around the world. Its California campus also has programs and activities involving students outside classrooms; these are Student Garden Project, Edible Explorations student club, and family meal. The Texas campus also offers annual events such as Latin Flavors, American Kitchens and Healthy Flavors. The official institute colors are Green and Yellow.

Its academic programs consist of accelerated culinary arts certificate, Associate degrees in two areas, Bachelors degree in three areas, and also graduate certificate programs. Its prestigious facilities are Anton Plaza, Roth Hall, Conrad N. Hilton Library, J. Willard Marriott Education Center, the Marriott Pavilion and Margie Schubert Library.
