Columbia is a private research institute and an Ivy League which was founded in the year 1754. It was established through Royal charter of King George II of England and held its classes in the same year as King’s College. By 1784 it became Columbia College and three years later, the college found itself under the governing body of Board of Trustees.  It was in late 19th century that the college transitioned as a university.

Based in New York City, New York, it came to its present location in the year 1896 and has the honor of being the oldest higher education institute in New York state and fifth oldest in the country. It is also privileged to be affiliated with and have as its Alumni, the 5 Founding Fathers of the United States, 123 Pulitzer Prize winners, 98 Nobel laureates; 77 National Medal of Science winners and many other notable people.

Columbia University in the City of New York provides a rigorous academic and a comprehensive campus life for its students. It offers over 250 student led clubs and organisations which present a huge variety of social units, activity hubs and learning and growth platforms for its students. These include cultural, performing arts, religious, community service, causes, academic, health and various other interest groups. Besides these, the university also brings events and activities related to business, medical and religious programs. Environmental sustainability is also seriously pursued on campus. The university supports recycling and waste, water conservation, green buildings, reducing carbon emissions, energy conservation and many others. An innovative initiative is the Green Labs which works for solvent recycling where in used xylene and ethanol is recycled for use again. There are in total five green labs present on campus which works on different materials.

The university offers a huge variety of undergraduate as well as graduate programs organised into 21 schools and colleges ad over 250 academic departments. Its distinctive facilities and buildings are Low Memorial Library, Butler Library, Dodge Hall, St. Paul’s Chapel, Earl Hall, Pupin Hall, Lawrence A. Wien Stadium and few others.
