CDU is a private, non profit university serving in the field of medical education. After a long struggle to get better medical education for the region’s community by the people, the medical school was established in 1966 and was called Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School. Similarly, as the time went by, the increasing educational needs of the community once again led the school to transform as a university by 1987.

The university is situated in Willowbrook, Los Angeles County in California. It is a historically black institute and is named after the African American physician, a pioneer in blood preservation work, Dr. Charles R. Drew. The mission behind the university is to bring education and practices, producing not only health care professionals but individuals with honesty and dedication towards serving their people.

At Charles R Drew University of Medicine and Science, students are prepared on a deeper level for the rigorous course of medical studies undertaken by them. Academics are complemented with research at the university. At present, the institute is focused on research projects relating to cancer health disparities, HIV/AIDS and cardiometabolic research. Students are engrossed in the understanding of community responsibility through clinical care programs. Students are made to participate in serving the community through education and outreach programs; these are Drew CARES which is about developing treatment and prevention and Drew University HIV/AIDS Education and Community Outreach Project, which is about creating awareness among people. The staff also provides free HIV screening through these projects. Further ahead in the community services, the university has initiated Farmer’s Market activity in collaboration with the community development department and Heritage Education Group.

There are 18 academic programs offered at the university, which include Bachelors and Masters Degree programs, Graduate Certificate programs, General Studies and others. Its prominent department is the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing.
