Central College Seal About Central College

Central is a private liberal arts college that was founded by the early settlers in the region. The immigrants had come to the region having escaped Netherlands and after settling had been determined to have educational opportunities, hence set up a Baptist institute in 1853. The institute held its first classes the next year, and since then has not stopped in contributing towards the lives of its students.

It was in 1994 that the institute renamed itself as Central College and has been situated in Pella, Iowa. With its ecumenical Christian tradition, the college has been busy in developing students at all levels, mind, spirit and body, believing that healthy and sound individuals are needed to lead their societies and confront their issues.

The student life at Central is filled with interesting experiences and unique traditions. The traditions hold importance but also provide fun for students; there is Lemming Race which is homecoming but is celebrated through costumes, Let’s Play Gennis, where students mix golf and tennis, bats of the former and ball of the latter, Be Our Guest, where students are invited over by their faculty and teachers; there are more such traditions. Moreover, campus involvement comes through over 50 student clubs and organizations, honorary organizations or music opportunities through ensembles, bands, choirs, chorus and other such options. Community service through volunteering activities takes place with partners or through participation in Welcome Week’s Red Rock Rocks Service project and Dance Marathon. Students are enjoined in faith through campus ministries which organizes national or international mission trips, or small study groups. For those students wanting to learn leadership skills are also given chance to be part of fraternities, sororities, Leadership and Entrepreneurship Program or others. Athletic participation takes place at NCAA Division III and the campus colors are Red and white.

Academic programs at the college are undergraduate programs with 73 academic programs to choose from which include majors, minors and pre-professional advising. Its prestigious buildings are Maytag Student Center, Roe Center, Vermeer Science Center, Weller Center for Business and International Studies, Geisler Library and Kuyper Athletic Complex.
