A private university and a non profit higher education institute, Caribbean began in 1969 as Caribbean Junior College. With limited educational opportunities available to students, this new college in the region opened up many educational opportunities. It was first accredited in 1972 and by 1978 was offering programs at Baccalaureate level and with this progressed as a university college. Its present transition, into a university happened in 1990.

Presently, Caribbean University is based four different locations, operating as a separate campus; Bayamon (f. 1969), Vega Baja (f. 1977), Carolina (f. 1979) and Ponce (f. 1985). With its academic opportunities, the university aims to uplift the social and economic conditions by providing education to understand the changes and contribute towards positive community development.

Students are provided with complete university life experience at Caribbean. Students are encouraged to be involved in student campus opportunities; the university provides academic but also social, cultural as well as sports activities. There are Students Associations which voice student concerns; each students when is newly exposed to the university is given an Orientation as well as counselling for better induction into new life. Arts are also taken positively and the students are provided opportunity. There are gallery exhibitions, and students ponder over and enact their funny performances. It is the creative laboratory and a place to for faculty and students to work closely in their learning of skill.

Its academic programs include bachelors, Master and Doctoral programs. There are over 10 Bachelors programs, six Master’s program and doctorate programs in Education with specializing it in Curriculum and Teaching. The notable facility at the university consist Virgilio Dávila Library.
