About California State University-Chico
A Public university today, CSU Chico began in 1887 as it was established through a legislative act as a normal school. It was initially established as a branch to the State Normal School for Chico on the land donated by John Bidwell. Classes were first held in 1889. It progressed slowly as a Teacher’s College in 1921, started awarding baccalaureate degrees in 1924, turned into a State College in 1935 and eventually as a university in 1972.
The university is the second oldest university in the system of CSU and is located in Chico, California. With its more than 125 year old experience, the institute brings knowledge, intellect and a developmental environment to prepare its students for a lifetime of contribution towards their life and others.
California State University-Chico brings everything that is needed for the students to outgrow and have a complete development. The student life begins with student organisations, more than 160 present at the campus covering academics, sports, leadership, sustainability and environment. At the university, there is focus on development of leadership activities and community service through Wildcat Leadership Institute, FLO and CAVE to name a few. But that’s not all; there is entertainment through performances and art events. The university is also ahead in sustainability efforts, such as having LEED buildings, recycling and other initiatives. The institute is also not without its unique traditions such as the Founder’s Week which is being celebrated since 1909 and the Chico Experience Week – a 10 day celebration involving fun and socialising. There are other events as well. The official colors at the campus are Cardinal and White and its mascot is ‘Willie the Wildcat’. The university’s athletic teams, wildcats participate at the NCAA Division I.
CSU Chico offers more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs, through seven colleges and five schools. Additionally, the university has 29 centers and institutes, including government, economic, entrepreneurship, sustainability and others. Its notable facilities are Turner Print Museum and Meriam Library.
