About California Institute of Integral Studies
CIIS is a Private, non profit institute which was founded in 1968, however its roots began with the Cultural Integration Fellowship (CIF) which was founded in 1951 by Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri and his wife, Bina. Dr. Chaudhuri was chair of the Philosophy Department at Krishnagar College in Bengal and was invited by Professor Spiegelberg. As the number of students increased, Dr. Chaudhuri extended CIF and opened an educational branch.
It came to be called as California Institute of Integral Studies in 1980 and received accreditation from Western Association of Schools and Colleges Senior College and University Commission (WASC-SASC), the next year. Over the years, it has developed into a pioneer in Integral studies, intellectually engaging students in diversity, cultural and traditional inclusivity, and value system and community life from both east and west.
The campus life at CIIS goes beyond the walls of the classrooms. The Student Alliance is the student run group which organizes events engaging students in leadership and active involvement in global issues such as racism, philosophy, spirituality and others. Additionally, it offers public performances through workshops and conferences bringing speakers and scholars to the campus. The institute is well equipped with resources for every student need. Not only academics, but with its art galleries to the Zen Garden at the roof top the institute has all the facilities for its students to have a fun time. The institute also believes highly in sustainability causes and has launched its Ecological Justice Initiative (EJI), which monitors activities at the campus to see if they are in balance with its commitment to stay sustainable. The college also has its Eco friendly cafe.
Academic programs at CIIS include Bachelor’s degree programs, four Master’s degrees and two doctorate programs. There are more than 20 programs offered, overall. Its notable facility is its Laurance S. Rockefeller Library.
