California Baptist University Seal About California Baptist University

CBU is a Private Christian institute offering liberal arts education, which opened its doors to students in 1950 and was founded in El Monte, California and classes were held at the First Southern Baptist Church. It was after four years that the college was granted charter by the State of California, in 1954. Gradually the college took pace and developed its program offerings as well as its facilities and so by 1998 transitioned as a university.

Facing growth in its student population and with the need for better resources, the university relocated from El Monte to Riverside where it remained thereon, early in its journey in 1955. The university brings a mix of spiritual and academic experience for its students but it is only because it aims for its students to be purposeful individuals that attach more meaning to their actions and decisions in life.

California Baptist University is filled with interesting traditions and events throughout the year.  There is Coffeehouse where artists perform at the university; Late Night Breakfast where food is served to the students by faculty and staff; Commuter Sidewalk Café, a monthly event where the commuters are given coffee and bagels for free. Some of its traditions are dedicated to causes such as Blood Drive where students donate blood. There is a thriving arts culture at the campus; students enjoy performances in the Wallace Theatre or student work display in the CBU Gallery. There is a prominent spiritual life prevalent through Chapel services as well as through Discipleship and Compassion Ministries. There are many other student clubs present on campus for students to further pick their interests and develop their skills.  There are university athletic teams, called ‘Lancers’ take part in NCAA at Division II. The campus colors are Navy Blue and Gold.

Academic programs at CBU include Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. It offers 81 majors and 64 minors at undergraduate level and 25 Master’s program (along with 45 concentrations) and three doctoral degrees. Its prestigious facilities are Annie Gabriel Library and JoAnn Hawkins Music building, a state of the art music facility.
