About Brooks Institute
Brooks Institute is an arts college that began in 1945 as Brooks Institute of Photography by Ernest H. Brooks, Sr. The institute is named after Brooks, Sr., its founder, a person who had exceptional passion for underwater photography and his passion inspired underwater video courses and still photography that found way in the 1960s. The institute stayed within the Brooks family until 1999 when it was purchased by Career Education Corporation (CEC).
With experience in running higher education institutes, CEC expanded the institute and its academic programs into other areas of arts such as film, graphic design and had dropped Photography from its name, keeping only Brooks Institute by 2007. It sprang into multi campuses; however by 2015 it had changed its ownership again and had reduced to solo campus in Ventura, California. In 2016, the college decided to shut down and hence has suspended its operations.
The campus of the institute provided every opportunity to its students for a complete immersion in all forms of arts and not only the one chosen by each individual. While the campus had library for a more theoretical knowledge, it also provided galleries, two public art galleries, The Gallery 27 and the Visions Gallery which displayed works from faculty, students, alumni as well as other guest work. As part of its academic in the field of Visual Journalism, the curriculum provided an excellent opportunity to each student to spend around two months in another country and document the culture in these places. This provided a great deal of exposure needed to understand the depth of the field.
Academic programs at the institute were accredited by Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools and consisted of six programs; photography, video and film production, visual journalism, graphic design, and two Master’s programs in Photography and Scientific and Technology Imaging.
