About Boricua College
Boricua is a Private institute providing post secondary education and is based in New York City, New York. The college was founded by Victor G. Alicea and other people with him who shared similar passion about providing educational opportunities to the Hispanic people and Puerto Ricans. These communities lacked educational opportunities and especially those designed keeping their needs in mind. It was established in 1974.
The college operates through three other campuses in the state of New York besides its New York campus; two in Brooklyn and one in Bronx. Over the time, the college understanding the needs of the people and communities it serves has earned the title as a ‘non traditional’ college, one where its education focuses more on developing cognitive skills.
Campus life at Boricua College is also fun and interesting. Along with a rigorous academic routine, the college brings its students various activities. The college takes particular interest in arts and holds many performance based events. It holds poetry series annually and it holds Puerto Rican Folk Art Festival. There is also a college chorus that consists of faculty, students as well as alumni and brings performances throughout the city and not just the college. The college also aims to become a preservation of Puerto Rican culture through its special collection in the library where it holds Puerto Rican Diaspora Collection. It is also working on the collection of Latin Music which is still under development, with which it hopes to participate in the Hispanic community.
Academic programs offered at Boricua include Bachelor Degree program (five programs) and Master’s Degree Programs (three programs). It also offers Upward Bound (TRIO) Program, which is only for the students from Louis D. Brandeis High School to prepare them for the college entrance exams. Its notable facility is the The Galerías de Arte, its gallery which is present on each of its campus and showcases the work and brings discussions and workshops with Puerto Rican and Hispanic artists.
