Biola originally started as Bible Institute of Los Angeles in 1908. It came to establishment through the efforts of two exceptional men, Rev. T.C. Horton and founder of the Union Oil Company, Lyman Stewart. These two men were driven by the same passion of having Christian centered higher education. Because of its impact and outreach within the country and beyond, the institute expanded its curriculum offering modern education while also keeping the focus on biblical studies. Its transition as a university happened in 1981.

Today, Biola University is a Private Evangelical Christian institute for higher education and is based in La Mirada, California. Its progress as a progressive university can be seen in its range of more than 540 extension courses and the university reaching out globally from Canada to China as early as 1909.

University life at Biola is strictly focused at developing its students in every sphere of their lives whether it is academic, community leadership or physical. It holds two most important events at the university, the Missions Conference, which is held in the spring semester and the Torrey Memorial Bible Conference for the fall semester. These are among the largest conferences held worldwide and are three day events, held to create cultural awareness, to educate about missionary work and act as a social gathering for students and faculty. Besides, there are other opportunities for students looking for spiritual connection such as Chapel service, ministries and missions.
