About Barry University
Barry, based in Miami Shores, Florida, is a Private Catholic institute and was founded by the Most Reverend Patrick Barry, Bishop of St. Augustine, and Reverend Mother M. Gerald Barry, brother and sister united in the mission to provide education for women. Once having decided to build a higher education institute, the property for the institute was purchased in 1939 and the college began instructions a year later in 1940.
The university had always been fortunate in finding support in individuals who have contributed greatly to its progress. John Graves Thompson, former mayor of the city and Reverend Monsignor William Barry greatly influenced and shaped the institute. Barry University has grown from a single campus to 17 campuses throughout Florida.
Student life at Barry campus is a unique experience that blends intellectual immersion with culture, arts, experience, activities in a warm and friendly environment. There are more than 60 organizations and student associations present on campus which are not only active on the campus, but also look for opportunities outside of campus to be engaged in. There are community service and uplifting activities such as being involved in hunger or shelter programs or working towards building organic farming. There are unique recreation facilities; students can take part in athletic teams which take part in NCAA Division II and Sunshine State Conference (SSC). However there are also archery and bowling. Arts are more than just education and students are involved in bring creative performances. The university also has its shield which is a mixture of Bishop Patrick Barry coats of arms and of the Dominican Order. The campus colors are Black, Red and Silver.
The university has a wide range of academic offerings, providing more than 100 degree program choices at undergraduate and graduate level. Study Abroad programs are also available in 28 countries globally. Its distinctive departments are Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work, Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law Frank J. Rooney School of Professional and Career Education and two others.
